Caramelized apples, toasted oats, and a sugary, buttery sauce… this campfire apple crisp is what fall camping is all about!

These apple crisp foil packets are the ultimate no-fuss campfire dessert: just apples, oats, brown sugar, butter, and cinnamon wrapped up in foil and cooked until warm and bubbly.

It’s everything we love about apple pie, without the pie crust (or the dishes). This dessert can be prepped entirely at home, so all you need to do is toss it over the fire for a few minutes.

Top with a dollop of whipped cream, or, if you’re feeling ambitious, try out our camping-friendly ice cream in a coffee can recipe!

A person wraps ingredients in foil on a picnic table, with two foil packets resting on a grill grate over a campfire nearby.

We sized this recipe to be 1 serving per foil packet, because the tension that can arise from splitting a dessert like this is not worth the risk. Partners, friends, siblings—everyone is getting their own separate serving!

Tips for making this camping

  • Toss these on the grill grate over low heat once you sit down for dinner, and they’ll be waiting for you when you’re done.
  • If a campfire isn’t an option, heating these foil packets in a skillet over a camp stove is a great way to reduce cleanup.
  • We highly recommend individual portions—you are not going to want to share this.

Pre-trip Prep

  • This dessert can be fully prepped ahead of time. Mix the ingredients, portion into foil packets, crimp the edges, place in a waterproof zip-top bag, and store in the cooler.

Recipe variations

  • Add a handful of chopped nuts like almonds, pecans, or walnuts
  • Sprinkle some dry granola on top to give it a little extra crunch
  • Make this vegan-friendly by using a butter alternative (we like Earth Balance Buttery Sticks for this)
  • Top with whipped cream, Greek yogurt, or coffee can ice cream!

This Apple Crisp Foil Packet is the ultimate no-fuss campfire dessert: just apples, oats, brown sugar, butter, and cinnamon wrapped up in foil and cooked until warm and bubbly
Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 15 minutes
Total Time 20 minutes
Makes: 2 servings

Ingredients

  • 2 apples cored and sliced (Honeycrisp, Gala, or Granny Smith are all great)
  • ½ cup rolled oats
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 4 tbsp butter very soft or melted
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • Optional: A handful of chopped nuts like pecans or walnuts.

Instructions

  1. Tear off four sheets of heavy-duty foil (about 12″ x 12″). Lightly oil or spray the center, or use parchment paper to line.
  2. Divide sliced apples evenly between two foil sheets.
    2 apples
  3. In a bowl, mix oats, brown sugar, butter, cinnamon, and salt until crumbly. It should clump together when pressed.
½ cup rolled oats, ½ cup brown sugar, 4 tbsp butter, 1 tsp ground cinnamon, ¼ tsp salt
  4. Sprinkle half the topping over each portion of apples.
  5. Place the remaining two sheets foil over apples and crimp tightly to seal.
  6. Place packets directly on medium campfire coals or grill over medium heat. Cook 15–20 minutes, until apples are tender and topping is golden and caramelized.
  7. Carefully open packets (watch for steam!) and serve as is, or top with whipped cream.

Notes

Make-ahead: You can prep the oat topping at home and store it in a zip-top bag. Assemble with apples at camp right before cooking.
