This is the GPS tracker and satellite text messenger we took on the JMT and is one of our day hiking essentials. The Rainier Rain Jacket from REI is a fully waterproof jacket that features a 2.5-layer breathable fabric (REI’s version of GORE-TEX). 650 Down Jacket

Good, responsibly sourced down insulated jackets can be very pricey, but we think that REI’s 650 Down Jacket is the best bang for your buck (even when it’s not on sale!). It’s lightweight enough to be carried on backpacking trips, and we love that the shell fabric is made from recycled materials. I personally owned the earlier model of this jacket and it held up to many years of outdoor adventures. 

Powderbound Insulated Jacket

Waterproof, windproof, and insulated, the REI Powderbound is a full-featured winter jacket that’s designed for the slopes. A comparable winter ski jacket can easily cost twice as much, so this is an incredible value. 

Pack Away Cubes

We love these REI Pack Away Storage cubes! They have some structure to them so they stand upright, but are still soft-sided for when you are really playing Tetris in the trunk of the car. They’re great for clothing, camp kitchen gear, and bedding.

These are the pants we didn’t know we needed until we got a pair. There are some days when layering is needed–it’s cold when you start out in the morning but will warm up throughout the day. And then there are days you know are just going to be cold. That’s where these pants come in! They feature water-resistant fabrics and PrimaLoft synthetic insulation, so they are warm without being bulky. Perfect for winter hikes, snowshoeing, and chilly nights at camp.

These insulated slippers are perfect for cooler season camping trips, or to keep in the car to change into after a day in the snow.

This is a great waterproof boot for hiking in snow or in wet conditions. The materials and lug shapes are designed to provide good traction, and the fit is meant to be roomy and light while still offering great ankle support.

Kahtoola MICROspikes Traction System

These easy-on, easy-off microspikes slip on right over your hiking boots and give you complete traction when traversing over snow and ice. Microspikes were a game-changer for us, allowing us to continue hiking throughout the winter.

One of the ten hiking essentials is emergency shelter–and that’s even more important during the colder season when conditions can change quickly and unexpectedly. We always throw one of these emergency bivvies in our backpacks when we head out!

Fuego Hooded Down Jacket

Packed with 800 fill power of goose down, the Fuego is a stylish insulated down jacket that will keep you warm on the trail and around town. 

The Magma 850 is the warmest and lightest that REI makes. Invest in a good winter jacket and you can reclaim an entire season of the year. So if you shivered all through last winter (or avoided going outside at all) this is the jacket for you!

REI’s Trail Packs are great for day hiking! The 25L is plenty of room for an extra layer or two, snacks, and your 10 essentials. If you’re hiking in colder weather that requires more layers and gear, or if you’re hiking as a family and need to carry clothes and gear for your little one(s), the 40L will provide ample space.

These pants are great for hikers who prefer to hike leggings but need fabric & construction that is a little more durable. REI’s insulated Flash jacket is one of my favorite outdoor jackets, and now it comes in kids’ sizing! The durable ripstop fabric is water resistant and blocks the wind, and synthetic insulation means it doesn’t need to be babied like a down jacket. And, since it’s reversible, you get to have two colors of jacket in one!

When it comes to backpacking stoves, few are as iconic as the PocketRocket series from MSR. We’ve personally used both their newly revamped PocketRocket 2 and PocketRocket Deluxe and think they are both fantastic stoves for the backcountry. If you’re thinking of upgrading your backpacking stove, either would be a great option.

If you’re looking for a camping gift for the whole family, an upgraded tent could be the ticket! For camping, road trips, or long flights, the Sea to Summit Aeros is our favorite travel pillow. Soft, supportive, and cozy when inflated, it compacts down into a tiny stuff sack when stowed for travel. I used this pillow while hiking the John Muir Trail and 10 out of 10 it was definitely worth the weight.
