Golden, toasty bread filled with gooey apple pie filling. This easy pie iron dessert is a fall camping classic and a fun alternative to s’mores.

This Apple Pie Iron Dessert is camping simplicity at its finest. Just buttered bread, apple pie filling, and a few minutes over the fire transform into a warm, handheld treat that feels extra special on a crisp fall night.
The edges crimp together in the pie iron, sealing in all the gooey goodness, so there’s no mess and no dishes required. It’s a fun, kid-approved alternative to s’mores or apple crisp that hits all the cozy, cinnamon-spiced notes of autumn.
Tips for making this camping
- Preheat the pie iron before the first pie so you can coat it more easily with (melting) butter.
- Don’t overstuff the filling, or you’ll risk a blowout. A ½ cup of apple pie filling is ample.
- There’s no harm in checking to see how the browning is coming along. You can always toast more, but you can’t toast less.
Ingredient notes & variations
- Canned apple pie filling makes this recipe a cinch. If you have extra, add it to cinnamon apple pancakes in the morning.
- Remix! Cherry, blueberry, and pumpkin pie filling will work using this same method!
Helpful Equipment
- Pie Iron: You can’t make these hand pies without one! We have used this classic pie iron for years and love it. And, you can make all kinds of pie iron recipes once you have one!
- Heat-Resistant Gloves: You’ll need them to release the clip that clamps the pie irons together. We love Grill Armor gloves for anything campfire-related.
