This recipe came about on a camping trip where everything seemed to go wrong—it was dumping rain, so windy we had to chase our tent down like a tumbleweed, and just downright cold and unpleasant.

We needed something quick and fail-proof to warm up and boost morale. And so, this barely-even-a-recipe Nutella Hot Cocoa recipe came to be! It’s seriously one of the easiest warm drinks out there.

It requires only the barest of ingredients and can be ready in practically no time at all. And who can be angry when they’re sipping down a steamy mug of hazelnut hot chocolate? It might not turn your whole day around, but it could be the one thing that keeps you sane.

Ingredients for Nutella hot chocolate on a table

Ingredients

Milk: Any milk will do–dairy, oat, almond, etc. We like the creaminess of whole milk or barista-blend oat milk.

Nutella: The classic chocolate-hazelnut spread is what does most of the heavy lifting in this recipe and brings all the flavor.

Marshmallows: Optional, really, but a toasted marshmallow is the perfect way to top off this drink.

Instructions & Tips

Gently heat the milk in a pot over medium-low heat. You want to keep an eye on it to avoid scorching the milk, which will result in off-flavors.

Once the milk is steaming hot (not bubbling!), add the nutella and stir or whisk until it’s combined and smooth.

Pour into a mug, and top with a toasted marshmallow or whipped cream!

Variations

Extra chocolatey: Add a teaspoon or two of cocoa powder per cup of milk along with the Nutella to give it a richer chocolate flavor.

Boozy: This Nutella Hot Chocolate pairs perfectly with a splash of Bailey’s Irish Cream, Kahlua, or rum.

Extra Creamy: One of our tricks to creamier hot chocolate (which we use in our homemade Hot Cocoa mix) is to add a little bit of cornstarch to the milk. A little goes a long way—start with half a teaspoon added while the milk is cold, and stir while the milk is warming.

Made my own Nutella, using almond butter, honey and cocoa powder. And a little hot water to make it smooth. Worked like a charm as a substitute.
