Sweet, chocolatey, and a little salty, this Sea Salt Potato Chip S’more is a fun twist on the classic campfire dessert.
With Memorial Day just around the corner, the glorious warm weather summer camping season is nearly here! Long days, warm nights, and cozy campfires under the stars. These are the golden summer days we’ve dreamt about all winter! And what captures the essence of summer camping better than a toasty, chocolate S’more!
Some people are S’more purists. Graham Crackers, Marshmallow, and Milk Chocolate. That’s it! However, we hold a much broader view of what makes a S’more a S’more. We look at it like a sandwich. It’s defined as a concept, not a list of ingredients. Therefore it’s open to creative interpretations.
We’ve already dabbled with an Oregon inspired Hazelnut Marionberry S’more, a fall-themed Pumpkin Butter S’more and have witnessed our friend experience a divine revelation when he conceived of a S’mOreo.
The idea for this version came to us, as many of the great ones do, after a few beers around the campfire. Looking back and forth between an open bag of potato chips and our s’more, we realized these two things should go together.
The traditional S’more pairs sweet with sweet with sweet (which can be a little redundant), but the addition of a salty, crunchy potato chip really mixes things up – in a good way. But for this to work, you’ve got to have the right chips. We partnered with Kettle Brand because they make an excellent Sea Salt variety that really keeps the salty flavors on point. Light, crunchy, and salty like an ocean breeze. It pairs perfectly with the chocolate.
There are two ways to make this type of S’more. The more conservative approach is to place a potato chip inside a traditional S’more (on top of the marshmallow), so from top to bottom the order goes: graham cracker, potato chip, marshmallow, chocolate, graham cracker.
The more experimental technique is to discard the graham crackers entirely and replace them with suitably sized potato chips. A thin, yet sturdy piece of chocolate is a must for this approach to work because it’s going to need to provide structural support. In the end, this version is going to get messy no matter what. But it’ll be an extra crunchy, salty, and delicious mess.
So if you’re feeling mixing things up a little bit this Memorial Day, pick up a bag of Sea Salt Kettle Brand Chips and take your S’more game to the next level.
